Weekend in Boston: What to See and Do That’s Cheap

Time and money always seem to be a reason as to why I can’t take long, well-deserved vacations. Fortunately, weekend trips won’t take me away from the office and are more affordable on my wallet. Boston was a close option and with it being just a four-hour bus ride away, I was able to get out of my city and enjoy a different one. I was able to stay with a friend, which saved on accommodations and there’s plenty to see on foot that’s free. Here’s what I was able to see during my stay:

Boston by Foot Discovery Walking Tour
Now this was my favorite part of my weekend in Boston since walking tours are free and allow me get my cardio in for the day. I believe there were a couple walking tours that you had the option of doing. We took the Freedom Trail.

Massachusetts State House
This is where the Massachusetts government lives.

Granary Burial Cemetery
A little over 2,000 gravestones and 5,000 people are buried at the Granary Burial Cemetery, including John Hancock, Paul Revere and Sam Adams.

Old City Hall
Old City Hall was home to its city council from 1865 to 1969 and that’s about as much history as I’m going to give.

Holocaust Memorial
Now what kind of Jew would I be if I didn’t stop by Boston’s Holocaust Memorial? Even if I wasn’t Jewish, it’s a destination worth checking out for all those that want to reflect on the events that happened during the Holocaust. The six glass towers represent the six death camps and the numbers etched on the glass represent the registration numbers of the victims.

Sam Adams Brewery Tour
Nothing like getting a solid buzz at 2PM. The beer was good and our tour guide was total eye candy (or the beer could have made him seem that way?) Best part – everything was free!

Harvard University
I was hoping to find my future husband walking around Harvard’s campus, but to no avail. The campus is one of the oldest institutions in America and the architecture is amazing.

Cheer’s Restaurant
I feel insulted that no one even knew my name (<– bad attempt at a joke). Even though I wanted to eat affordably, I couldn’t give up eating at a restaurant that everyone’s heard of.

Mike’s City Diner
This is the perfect place to get greasy hangover breakfast food. It’s a popular place to eat for both locals and tourists and was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

There were many statues and photo opportunities along the trail, but seeing those are up to you. If you’d like to see the rest of my photos from my visit to Boston, visit my Flickr photostream by clicking here.
