Vietnamese Stereotypes About Americans

While working on a chapter about stereotypes with one of my classes, I was curious to find out what they honestly thought about Americans and our culture. Responses varied across the board: some were typical; some were interesting; and some were nicer than what I thought they would have said. Here’s just a small sampling of the ones I remember:

Feeling a Little Homesick

With only five weeks left in Vietnam, and four weeks of traveling, I’m anxiously anticipating my arrival back in NYC. Being away from home for this long made me realize how much I miss and love the people in my life, as well remind me to appreciate all the good fortune I have. Since home is just around the corner, I’m feeling a little more homesick than usual. Here are some ways I’m trying to cope.

May 1st is Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day

Today we remember the six million people that were killed during the Holocaust and in their memory say ‘Never Again’. I had the honor of visiting Yad Vashem, a large Holocaust museum located in Israel. One of the Israeli soldiers that joined us on our Birthright trip told me that his grandmother witnessed her parents being shot while she was hiding under the floor boards. It pains me to know that this ever happened, which is why we need to not only keep her memory alive, but to make sure something like this never happens again.
